Fast Feet: India Jazz Suites, Coming in March!
The Lively Arts and the Indiana Arts Council have teamed up to host a performance by Fast Feet: India Jazz Suites in IUP’s Fisher Auditorium. On March 22rd at 10 am, 7th through 9th graders from area school districts will see India Jazz Suites free of charge. Performing in India Jazz Suites will be the Emmy-award-winning tap dancer Jason Samuels and Pandit Chitresh, who is described by the Lively Arts website as an “Indian Khatak dance master”. These two talented and extraordinary dancers will carry out an energetic, exciting, and powerful performance through the collaboration of their unique dance styles, all while moving to the sounds of an accompanying American jazz ensemble and India music trio.

Come to the First Annual 2012 IAC Trashion Show: Couture Garbáge!

We are excited to announce that the 2012 IAC Trashion Show: Couture Garbáge will take place on Friday, March 30th, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm upstairs at the Coney. Thanks to the help of the IUP Fashion Association and the participation of the IUP art and fashion students, this unique fundraiser will feature over 50 edgy, original fashion designs and an incredible plastic sculptural piece made from recycled materials by the IUP art students in Steven Loar’s 3-D Design class.18 designers are signed up for the event so far, but the IAC and the IUP Fashion Association are still looking for people who would like to participate in the show. Any designers and models that are interested in registering for Trashion can register online. Trashion will be the first of an annual fundraiser event to benefit the Indiana Arts Council and its many programs. The event is open to the public and will take place from 5:00pm to 7:00pm upstairs at the Coney, located at 642 Philadelphia Street, Indiana, PA. Doors open for the public and VIP admittance at 5:00pm, when audience members can enjoy appetizers, door prizes, raffles, and an open bar at the Pre-Party before the fashion show. Student ticket admittance will begin at 6:00pm when the catwalk lights up.

VIP Admission will cost $25 each, and student tickets will cost $10 each. Volunteers enter free of charge. Tickets will be available for pickup through the Indiana Arts Council, Michael B. Shoes and Smicksburg Pottery, by phone 724-465-2787, or by mailing a check to Indiana Arts Council, PO Box 563, Indiana, PA 15701.

Cedric Watson Performs for Indiana County Students
On February 7th, 2012, the Indiana Arts Council helped facilitate an outreach event held by the Lively Arts of Indiana University of Pennsylvania featuring Creole musicians Cedric Watson and Desiree, two members of the five person band known as Bijou Creole. Approximately 82 elementary students from 4th grade classes at Eisenhower and Horace Mann attended the event, where they and their teachers listened to, learned, and asked questions about Creole music. Cedric Watson—the vocalist, leader, and creator of Bijou Creole—played several pieces for his young audience on the accordion while accompanied by Desiree on another instrument, allowing time for students to ask questions following each piece. He talked about the historical and cultural origins of Creole music, and also talked about the historical significance of the instruments he and Desiree were each playing. His performance even touched on the topic of language, as he introduced certain Creole words in his song titles and explained which French words they were each based on.
The event was organized as a part of the IUP ArtsPath Education Outreach program, and the Indiana Arts Council helped facilitate the day of the event by bringing students onto the Indiana University of Pennsylvania campus. The students who came were eager and highly engaged in the performance, and asked many questions of the two musicians. Through the unique style of his Creole music, Cedric Watson helped introduce students and teachers alike to a new culture and history they may have never known of before.

Trashion Designers Hard At Work
This year IAC has teamed up with the IUP Fashion Association and IUP professor Steve Loar’s plastics sculpture class to design the clothing line for this year’s fashion show fundraiser. TRASHION fashion shows center around unique garments created with re-purposed, recycled, or reused materials. IAC’s 2012 Trashion show will take place at the Coney on March 30.

The Evergreen Conservancy and the Indiana Arts Council teamed up with artists to use recovered iron oxide in their art! ( Click here to find out why this is important.) This project is intended to raise awareness about the environment and raise funds for these two organizations. Evergreen Conservancy supplied artists with the natural pigment from the Tanoma Abandoned Mine treatment system. Artists were encouraged to donate a piece of artwork to Evergreen created with the iron. The artist’s involvement goes further than simple support – they are helping keep streams clean! Find out how…
