YAC 2008

Jane Potter Baumer, a voice teacher who instructs at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and in her private home studio, first helped organize a student music recital for the Indiana Arts Council Youth Arts Celebration in the year 2010.  This year she  with an even greater number of students and a wider range of vocal and instrumental pieces registered to perform.

Music performances for the Youth Arts Celebration will take place at the Indiana Area Junior High School this year.  Jane hopes that the venue change will make the music performances more accessible for audience members and family, and that it will help engender a stronger connection between the Youth Arts Celebration and members of the community.

YAC 2010 Music Recitals in the Mall

For Jane and other art educators, the Youth Arts Celebration presents an important opportunity for their students to showcase their work, and also to remind members of the community about the many roles that art plays in our lives.  Art, according to Jane, has the ability to change lives in a positive and meaningful way.  She believes that music in particular can help people connect with one another by giving them an opportunity to collectively share the emotions and thoughts that are generated during a performance.  These connections are made between audience members, and also between performers and their patrons.  Being able to create something that has meaning for others is one of the most important and beautiful qualities of music that Jane Baumer admires, a quality that she hopes will be further realized during the Indiana Art Council 2012 Youth Arts Celebration this year.

Free and Open to the Public

Jane anticipates that the number and range of music performances at the festival will continue to grow in following years, along with the rest of this county-wide art celebration.  She hopes that the Youth Arts Celebration will generate greater support for the arts in the area, enabling creative educators and artists such as herself to make the arts more accessible to families all around.

Students from schools within and around Indiana school district will be appearing in this year’s recitals, including a combined choir performance by the Horace Mann and Ben Franklin choirs lead by Ellen Werner, and the Baumer Studio Treble Choir, instructed by Jane Baumer herself.

Trish Dodson works as an art teacher at multiple schools in Indiana County.  She has been involved in the Youth Arts

Celebration since its inception, and like many other art teachers in Indiana school districts, she will be featuring much of her students’ artwork in this year’s event.  However, her role as an art educator is slightly different from others.  For 13 years she has been giving art lessons to students with special needs, instructing courses in life skills classes at various schools in the area.

Trish believes that art has benefits for many students. When asked what she thought the arts could do for youth and adults with special needs, she stated that, “[Art] provides a voice for a lot of students who don’t necessarily excel academically.  It’s a form of expression.  There are a lot of kids out there who don’t know how to get their feelings out.”  She believes that art is extremely beneficial for the emotional well being of her students, especially for students with special needs.  For many of her students, art becomes a constructive outlet for anxiety, aggression, frustration, or other

difficult emotions that they cannot express in their day-to-day interactions.  Art is also a source of enjoyment for her students, having a strong calming effect that work in other academic courses cannot create.

Trish says that having the opportunity to display their work publicly at the Youth Arts Celebration does wonders for her students’ sense of confidence and self esteem.  The exhibit gives students’ families a chance to show support and encouragement for them and their accomplishments as well, an opportunity that sometimes does not arise often for students with special needs and disabilities.

The 2012 Youth Arts Celebration will begin on Tuesday, May 1^st with the opening of the visual arts exhibit at the Indiana Mall.  The exhibit will feature work by Trish Dodson’s students from around Indiana County, among hundreds of other pieces made by countless other students of varying ages.  Come see some of the amazing work being done by the youth in Indiana County this year at the Youth Arts Celebration!

Student works and performances from several different genres will be presented at this year’s event, including dance.  This year’s Youth Arts Celebration will feature dance performances by students of Sue Hewitt’s Dance Studio, and Sharon’s School of Dance and Gymnastics.  Both of these studios are located in Indiana County and offer dance lessons to students of varying ages and experience levels.

Sharon Antelis, the founder of Sharon’s School of Dance, participated in last year’s arts festival.  Approximately 40 of her students performed on May 5^th and 6^th in 2011, executing 10 different dance pieces for a public audience.  They featured numbers from their Showtime performance series as well, which were happening a few weeks after the Youth Arts Celebration.  Sharon hopes to feature dances from this year’s Showtimes at the festival as well.

Sharon says that those who attend the Youth Arts Celebration this year will be able to see a wide variety of different dance styles presented by Sharon’s School of Dance, including jazz and hip-hop.  Even though the performances are still early in the planning stages, she hopes that the Youth Arts Celebration will help people attain an appreciation for what children can do when they create art.

2010 Youth Arts Celebration!

The Youth Arts Celebration is a free arts festival featuring students, grades K-12, in a public showcase of their work to a wide community audience.  Originally conceived of by a group of dedicated art educators working at local schools, many whom are still involved today, the event has grown and expanded over the last five years to encompass a wide range of art mediums and genres.  Many individuals and groups will be involved, including committee members Cathy Paterson, Barry Pogein, Viera Bonnet, and Bill Double.  IUP Professor Steve Loar’s One Island program is new to the event this year, and IUP students in the National Art Education Association are hoping to organize interactive activities at the festival for youth to participate in. Performances by Sharon’s School of Dance, Sue Hewitt Dance Studio, Indie Strings, and the IUP String Project will also be featured.

The Indiana Arts Council also hopes that the Youth Arts Celebration will help people understand the importance of having the arts present in school curriculum.  Art plays an important role in the education of all students, not just youth interested in art or a creative career, because it develops critical thinking skills, self-expression, and confidence in students and children.  Having the opportunity to publicly exhibit and perform work can also be extremely beneficial to a student’s growth and sense of self-assurance.  By publicly exhibiting the work of youth from around the county, and by having an audience present to support and encourage the artwork of young children and students, the Youth Arts Celebration aims to show how art can be beneficial to youth and the community.

The 2012 IAC Trashion Show: Couture Garbáge takes place this Friday, March 30th, upstairs at the Coney, and the designs made by the students of the IUP Fashion Association and Professor Steve Loar’s 3-D Design class are finally coming together.   This past Sunday, Trashion Designers met in the 3-D Design classroom on IUP campus to have some of their completed work featured in the Indiana Gazette and the Penn. On Tuesday, Designer Stephanie Schrider from the IUP Fashion Association previewed a few of her designs at the Indiana’s Cookin’ show: Candemonium.

Amanda Harned and another student, Kara, are in charge of providing and setting up decorations for the fashion show at The Coney this Friday.  They will also be submitting their own designs to be featured in the fashion show: a dress made from catalogues and packing paper made by Kara, and another dress made of newspapers and an old t-shirt designed by Amanda.  They and other designers from the IUP Fashion Association say they have enjoyed having the opportunity to work with such unusual materials. “It’s different from designing clothes from fabric,” said Amanda .  “I’ve enjoyed being able to think of what to do.  There’s endless possibilities with how you can use trash.”

Students of Professor Steve Loar’s 3-D Design class were also present at last weekend’s photo shoot, working on their wearable sculptural pieces to feature in the show.  A wide range of animals will be represented by these sculptures.  One student is currently working on a piece that will represent a toucan, made from a five-gallon water container, detergent bottles, and plastic caps.

What Is Trashion?

2012 IAC Trashion Show: Couture Garbáge

The 2012 IAC Trashion Show: Couture Garbáge (also known as Trashion) is a fundraising event created with the purpose of generating support for the Indiana Arts Council, recruiting volunteers, and promoting the creative and innovative artwork of local artists.  The event will feature raffles, delicious appetizers, and an incredible fashion show featuring original clothing designs and three-dimensional artwork unlike anything seen before.  The money raised at this year’s fundraiser will help finance current and future IAC programs, such as the Youth Arts Celebration in May,  The Open Mic, and the county-wide Arts and Economic Survey IV.  As a result of this fundraiser, the IAC will be better equipped to continue promoting the creation and appreciation of the arts in Indiana County.

Although Trashion will benefit many of the IAC’s future endeavors to support the arts, there is one project in particular that we wish to bring to attention at this year’s Trashion Show.  RUMPUS, or Repurposing Used Materials for People to Use for Stuff, is a developing IAC project that is the impetus for the Trashion fundraiser.  The goal of RUMPUS is to open an art supply store where salvaged art materials can be made available for the public to purchase at affordable prices.  In the same way that the 2012 IAC Trashion Show will demonstrate how trash can be transformed into fashion and art, RUMPUS will also emphasize the creative potential of used and unusual materials by presenting them for re-sale and re-purposing at low costs. Although RUMPUS is still a work in progress, the IAC believes that the store will offer a valuable and affordable resource for artists, students, teachers, and families throughout Indiana County.

Who’s Involved So Far?

Trashion aims to benefit the IAC, however organizing and planning the event would not have been possible without the assistance of volunteers from the local community and the students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  In particular, the IUP Fashion Association and the 3D Design Class at IUP have played an integral part in making Trashion possible this year by providing designers, models, scenic decorations, and fashion pieces to feature on the runway at this year’s fashion show.

Between courses, work, and other obligations, IUP Fashion Association students have been working hard since Fall to conceive of, design, and construct unique items of clothing using only post consumer waste products. The designers who registered to participate in this year’s Trashion show have made use of a wide range of materials, such as soda cans, tissue paper, plastic bags, magazines, and even packaging for fast food.

The Fashion Association has even done some creative marketing of their own on IUP campus by making posters out of recycled magazine clippings and cardboard.  Members of the Fashion Association say they want to get as many people on campus and in the community to help support the Indiana Arts Council as possible, and are still encouraging interested students to register as models or designers.

“I think it’s a really cool event,” said Felicia, a member of the IUP Fashion Association and an undergraduate student at IUP, during an interview in February.  “It hasn’t been done before.  We get to express our creativity and use unlikely materials to make something fabulous.  We haven’t done anything like this before, but it’s been fun constructing an outfit.”

Other members of the Fashion Association are looking forward to the event as well, excited at the opportunity to use their skills in such an unusual and unexpected ways.

IUP student involvement is not just limited to the university’s Fashion department, either.   Undergraduate students from the Art department will also have pieces featured in the show, such as the sculptural pieces of professor Steven Loar’s Three Dimensional Design course.

Additionally, community members have donated unique fashion accessories, baskets for auction, and volunteered their time and energy to get the word out about Trashion. What’s Happening Now?

Approximately 30 designers from the IUP Fashion Association, the IUP  3D Design Class, and the Indiana community have registered to be a part of the Trashion show, along with many other models, scenic designers, marketing and administrative volunteers.

Trashion provides an opportunity for artists to showcase their talents and innovative work to their community while also raising support for the IAC and the arts in Indiana County.  This event is more than just a fundraiser; it is the result of the collaboration between several arts-focused groups who share a similar passion and appreciation of art, in all its various forms.
