Short Fiction Writing Contest

The Indiana Arts Council is proud to announce the winners of its inaugural Youth Short Fiction Writing Contest.  The contest was open to all students in grades 9 and 10 in Indiana County, and 26 students submitted stories for review.  Reviewers were IUP professor Rosalee Stillwell of Punxsutawney and freelance writer Andy Stewart of San Marcos, CA.

The Winners Are…

9th Grade Division:

10th Grade Division:

  • 1st Place, 9th Grade and Overall Winner: Isabella Brunetto, Indiana Area, Identify
  • 2nd Place, 9th Grade: Charles Edwards, Purchase Line, Rats in the Rain
  • 3rd Place, 9th Grade: Leeah Peles, Purchase Line, Magenta Heist
  • 1st Place, 10th Grade: Payton Miller, Purchase Line, As Long as I Have You
  • 2nd Place, 10th Grade: Makinna Pearce, Purchase Line, The Great Hunt
  • 3rd Place, 10th Grade: Cherish Kauffman, Purchase Line, The Hearts of a Chicken

Winners in the 9th Grade division received a $50 gift card from SCG Hobby Shop for 1st Place; a $25 gift card from the IUP Co-Op Store for 2nd Place; and a $10 gift card from The Artists Hand Gallery and Espresso Bar provided for 3rd Place.

Winners in the 10th Grade division received $50, $25, and $10 gift cards from IUP Robert Cook Honors College for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Places, respectively.

The overall winner also received $50 from the Indiana Arts Council.

The IAC thanks all of the students who participated and the teachers who encouraged them.  We are also grateful to the support of our sponsors who helped make this possible as well as the work of Arts Council board members Dan Weinstein and Sarah Bond for their leadership on this project.
